Calico Crusher Report: Cedros Island Delivered Big Time!
Share
We just got back from a killer trip to Cedros Island, and let’s just say the calico bass bite was absolutely wide open. On one especially insane day, we landed 127 calico bass — no joke. It was one of those days you dream about: glassy water, perfect conditions, and non-stop action from sunrise to sunset.
What Worked?
The standout bait of the trip was hands-down the 8” Torpedo by Sudden Impact Baits. This thing was a game-changer. We rigged it on an Owner Beast 8/0 hook with a 3/4 oz weight for that perfect weedless presentation. If you’ve fished Cedros before, you know the kelp can be brutal — but this setup let us get right in the zone where the big bass live without constantly getting snagged. The hits were savage — and often back-to-back.
That combo was doing serious work all trip long, especially when we had to punch through the thick stuff and fish deep.
Gearing Up
If you're planning a trip to Cedros — or even just hitting the local boiler rocks or kelp beds here in SoCal — this setup should be in your box. We’ve got both the 8” Torpedoes and Owner Beast Hooks in stock at the shop and online, so you can gear up wherever you are. Links can be found below.
Calicos Are Chewing in Cali Too
And here’s the bonus — we’re starting to see more and more calicos biting right here at home along the Southern California coast. SoCal structure spots are heating up, and this same rig that crushed it at Cedros is perfect for those local missions too.
We had an incredible time out there — good people, big fish, and memories that’ll last a lifetime. If you're chasing that kind of trip (or bite), swing by the shop or check us out online. We’ll help get you dialed in.
Until then, tight lines and see you out there!
