Channel Islands Fishing Report: Yellowtail Bite Heats Up!
If you've been waiting for the right time to get offshore, now is the time. The bite is heating up around the Channel Islands, and the Aloha Spirit has been seeing excellent action on yellowtail, with calico bass continuing to provide steady action throughout the day. Whether you're chasing your first yellowtail or looking to put together a quality mixed bag, now is a great time to get out on the water.
Yellowtail Tackle Recommendations
When targeting yellowtail, keeping your setup simple and effective is key. A 25–30 lb flyline setup paired with a 25–40 lb fluorocarbon leader, a 1/0–2/0 live bait hook, and an optional ¼–½ oz slider sinker is a proven combination when fishing live sardines. If conditions call for it, adding a slider sinker can help get your bait into the strike zone.
If you enjoy fishing artificials, be sure to bring a heavier setup spooled with 50–65 lb braid along with a selection of surface irons or yo-yo jigs. Having one bait rod and one jig rod rigged and ready will prepare you for just about any opportunity that comes your way.
Be Ready for White Seabass & Halibut
While yellowtail are the primary target, it's always worth being prepared for a chance at white seabass or halibut. One of our favorite setups is an 8-inch white fluke paired with a 1–2 oz lead head. This combination has proven effective when drifting sandy bottom or fishing deeper structure and is always a great backup to have tied on.
Why You Should Bring an A-Rig
One lure that's become a favorite among Southern California anglers is the A-Rig (Alabama Rig). Designed to imitate a small school of baitfish, it's incredibly effective when fish are keyed in on bait.
The A-Rig shines around kelp lines, boiler rocks, and other hard structure, making it an excellent choice for calico bass, but don't be surprised if a hungry yellowtail decides to crash it as well. Rigged with 3–5 inch swimbaits and fished with a steady retrieve around bait schools or kelp edges, it can be one of the most productive lures you have tied on throughout the day.
