Lobster Season is Back – Here’s What You Need To Know!

It’s that time of year again… lobster season is officially here! Whether you’re a seasoned hoop netter or heading out for your very first trip, Bob Sands Fishing Tackle has you covered with everything you’ll need to get on the bugs this season.

When is Lobster Season?

Lobster season in California will start on Friday, September 26 until the first Wednesday after March 15th. Before you head out, make sure you have your required Lobster Report Card—this is a must!

The report card is mandatory and must be filled out every single time you go out, even if you don’t catch any lobsters. Keeping this updated is part of staying compliant and keeping our fisheries healthy.

Mandatory Gear You’ll Need

To legally and successfully net for lobsters, here’s what you’ll want to have on hand:

       - Lobster Report Card – required every trip. (Mandatory to have)

       - Lobster Gauge – to measure your catch and ensure it’s the legal size before keeping. (Mandatory to have)

        - Hoop Nets – We highly recommend the Promar Hoop Nets, proven to be durable and effective.

        - Promar Bait Cage – perfect for keeping your bait secure inside the net.

The Secret Weapon: Lobster Logs

One of our favorite baiting methods here at Bob Sands is using Lobster Logs. But what exactly are they?

A Lobster Log is a pre-made bait log designed for easy use and long-lasting attraction. Here’s how it works:

      1. Open the bag and remove the lobster log.

      2. Insert the log into your bait tube or cage.

      3. Lock the cage, drop it in the water, and let it work its magic.

The saltwater naturally thaws the log while it’s submerged, slowly releasing scent into the water. This means you get a longer soak time and less mess compared to dealing with fresh bait.

For even better results, we love pairing our logs with Bug Juice, which adds another layer of scent to draw those lobsters in.

Stock Up Before You Go

From ropes and floats to hoop nets, bait cages, gauges, lobster logs, and bug juice, we’ve got it all in-store and online at Bob Sands Fishing Tackle. Stop by and get geared up for the season—because nothing beats that first fresh lobster dinner of the year!
